Celebrate Earth Day By Riding A Bike

Cycling is the greenest way to celebrate Earth Day. Riding a bike also keeps you healthy and can be enjoyed with family, friends, a partner, and pets.

Cycling is one of the oldest modes of transportation. It is rare to see someone going to work or school on a bike now. But there was certainly a time when having a bike was necessary for the daily commute. Now, we have e-bikes that assist in pedalling and go faster.

Riding a bike has again become a necessity with increasing carbon emissions destroying the Earth. With war missiles, heat waves resulting in jungle fires, and pollution from vehicles, every day the Earth is getting hotter. We somehow tolerated burning skin and high electricity bills last summer. This year seems not that different with extreme weather conditions.

Cycling cannot solve all climate crisis issues, but it is one way to spread awareness. Becoming fit is another important reason to ride a bike this Earth Day. This post will highlight the various benefits of riding a bike and doing our part to save our beautiful planet.

Everyone knows that riding a bike is one way to embrace a sustainable lifestyle. Let’s examine in detail why riding a bike on Earth Day or any other day is better.

1) Riding a bike is environment friendly

Riding a bike saves our environment from harmful carbon emissions. Air pollution has become the main cause of heart and respiratory diseases. In fact, in crowded cities, pollution of the air as well as noise are both harmful, especially for children. Motor technology has enveloped our lives so easily and quickly that we have to go back to nature to find a solution. With zero emissions from a bike, we can travel responsibly and save ourselves and the Earth.

2) Riding a bike is budget-friendly

With the rise in petrol and diesel prices, what better way to travel than by riding a bike? Thanks to cycling competitions, a bike has also undergone a lot of modern transformations. Bikes are easily available in different varieties, styles, and speeds and are less expensive than any other vehicle. Besides, maintenance on a bike is also easy.

3) Biking is the easiest mode of transport

Whether you want to go to the nearest grocery store, drop kids off at school, or even go to the office, maybe just for one day, you can ride a bike. You can park a bike easily because it does not cover a lot of space. You can ditch the traffic by easily swishing ahead on the bike lanes.

4) Organise a cycling event on Earth Day to raise awareness

There are many events organised on Earth Day to raise awareness about climate change. These events attract a lot of youngsters who will lead the future. A marathon or cycling event brings a community together to work towards creating a positive impact. Our leaders also receive a strong message from these events to take stricter actions to save the Earth.

5) Cycling is good for overall health

With our increasing dependence on technology, we are glued to our mobile phones and laptops. We sit more and move less. Riding a bike is a perfect excuse to include an exercise schedule and travel to work. According to Harvard University, cycling at a moderate pace for 30 minutes daily can help you burn approximately 240 to 300 calories. Any outdoor activity like cycling also refreshes your mind.

6) Enjoy nature trails on Earth Day with your loved ones.

Riding a bike with your family, especially during the spring and summer, is a fun get-together activity. It is another reason to enjoy the outdoors, camping, picnics, etc., while enjoying the weather. This is the season when colourful flowers fill the earth. The leaves look greener, and the sneaky squirrel runs around the trees and branches with her friend. Riding a bike with your partner can be romantic. Cycling reminds people of their childhood. The first lesson in riding a bike that your parent or your sibling gave you is always memorable.

7) Try an e-bike this Earth Day

It’s so easy to try different types of bikes these days. There are specialised bikes for long-distance bike marathons, mountain bikes for adventure sports, BMX bikes for stunts, tandem bikes for couples, etc. Trending nowadays is an e-bike. It may be a bit heavier and more expensive than a regular bike because of its motor. It needs to be charged at an EV station, which many countries are providing to ease traffic congestion. With the help of the motor, you can either ride your bike without pedalling and go faster. E-bikes are stylish and have a GPS tracker for safety. Some of the e-bikes also have smartphone integration.

Tips for riding a bike in hot weather

As the temperature rises, riding a bike becomes more challenging. Wearing quality bike gear ensures safety. Wear a helmet, knee pads, and bike goggles to prevent any severe damage from an accident.

Take care of your health while riding in hot weather. Wear sweat-resistant t-shirts and pants, carry a small towel, wear comfortable and breathable shoes. Don’t forget to keep a healthy, cool, energy drink in your bike to avoid dehydration.

Another thing that you can carry on your bike is a trash bag. Instead of throwing trash anywhere, put it in a bin. If you want to be part of Plogging movement to save the environment, you can read more about it in this article.

Following traffic rules is necessary for others and your safety. Avoid listening to music while riding a bike. You may be careful, but it’s difficult to stop a speeding car.

For a fun day on a bike, don’t forget to carry your personality. The colour, the technology, and the storage in a bike show off your interests. Flaunt your biceps or tattoos when riding a bike. Carry pretty flowers in your bike basket. Stylish sling bags are made for bikers. Or pamper your pet by carrying them on your bike.

  1. People don’t understand the importance of these little things

Like they consider riding a bike(atleast in india) against their pride.

They get expensive motorcycles and consider cycle something very low class.

But, as a cycle rider, I want to say there’s nothing peaceful than that.

It’s very relaxing and very satisfying

    1. That’s true about biking considered low class in India. People instead spend money on expensive gym membership and then ride on an exercise cycle, when they can wake up early and ride a bike in a green park. Part of the problem in Delhi is air pollution as well. Biking is very freeing.

    1. That’s true, Cindy. Speeding bikers who don’t follow traffic rules create havoc and put their own lives and everyone’s life at risk.
Thanks for liking this post. 😊

  2. I haven’t been on a bike for so many years I’ve probably forgotten how to do it well; I’m sure if I was ever to buy a bike and start riding again that I’d pick it all up again in no time. Getting out and about in this way is so good for the health of our bodies and out planet — love this!

    1. Riding a bike is surely a nostalgic experience these days with so many speeding motor vehicles. Earth Day is a good excuse to start cycling again, Molly. Go for it!
