How to Stay Active in the Winter Season?

Staying active in winter

“When it snows, you have two choices, shovel or make snow angels.”

We all become lazy during winters – staying indoors, feeling cozy and not willing to go out. Trying to move away from the fireplace is the last thing on our minds. But our bodies always remind us that sedentary lifestyles will make our joints stiff and immobile.

So, how can you stay more active during winter?
Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Just like during pandemic quarantine, there’s always something in and around the house that helps to be physically charged.

It’s not just limited to home workouts but practicing functional fitness is a great way for adults and the elderly to embrace movement even during the winter season.

Here are a few time-tested, simple, and efficient ways for beginners to maintain good health when it’s cold outside.

Home Workouts

The pandemic lockdown allowed me to explore home workouts and share my experience in this blog. One of the alternatives I found on YouTube was Tabata exercises – which are different fun ways to walk on the spot.

But I wanted some more work for my muscles, so I explored various options. The best exercise that can be added to on-the-spot walking is climbing stairs or step exercises.

If you don’t have stairs going up to a bedroom or if you are not living in an apartment-style accommodation, you can simply find a low stool or seating bench, and start doing step exercises.

It is better than walking because when you lift whether arms or body or legs, without any weights, you are using your bodyweight to push your limits. This results in improved overall strength.

Doing Chores

While winter sets a gloomy mood, don’t let it dampen your spirits towards completing everyday chores or delaying it for the next week. Simple activities can be done in and around the house, like:

  • Vaccume your carpet or bedspread,
  • Re-organize your closet or kitchen setup,
  • Modify seating in the living room,
  • Prepare and cook homemade meals,
  • Clean your car
  • Clear your front or backyard

Anyone can do it or you can employ someone to do it. However, doing it yourself is a great way to save money as well as complete a lot of neglected chores. It’s also important to stay hydrated with water and yummy and healthy soups.

Indoor Games

Keeping your body and mind charged needs a conscious effort to keep the winter blues away. Not just playing board or card games, legos, and puzzles offline or online are great fun but also you can try some indoor games that include getting up from the couch.

This includes games like Table Tennis, indoor bowling, scavenger hunt, hide and seek, musical chair, hopscotch, hula hoop, jump rope or skipping rope, dancing, and online yoga classes.

Outdoor Winter Sports

Indulging in outdoor winter sports may seem like a challenge at first, but once you are out there, looking at others participating, it also encourages you to enjoy. This includes simple physical activities like walking your pet to ice skating.

Or you can also join Zumba classes or a cycling community to make new friends. Cycling especially is also climate-friendly. Remember to warm up before doing any workout and stay hydrated. Also, don’t litter cans or papers or plastic bags, along the way, but throw it in the appropriate dustbin.

Help Your Community

Related to contributing to climate change is helping your local community. Winter is a harsh season for many homeless people and animals. There is a lot to do especially with the war not ceasing in many countries.

Research and find community help centers that are outdoors helping people with distributing everyday meals and clothes. You can also go to the nearest animal care center to donate essential stuff from pet food, water, warm covers, medical supplies, etc.

Final Thought

These are a few things that will help you stay physically and mentally active in the freezing season. While it’s cozy under warm blankets, many don’t have the luxury of feeling blue because they are struggling with basic needs.

Every step towards taking care of your physical requirements also helps your mind stay active.

So, tell me how are your winters going? Are doing any of the above-listed activities to help yourself and others?
