Bollywood Songs Celebrating Holi

Today is Holi, the festival of colours. It is a Hindu festival but is celebrated by everyone in India because it is so much fun. It marks the arrival of spring.

According to Hindu mythology, an evil king called Hiranyakashyap had special powers that made him almost invincible. He plotted to kill his own son, Prahlad, because he worshipped another god, Vishnu. The evil king told his sister Holika to drape a magical cloak around herself that does not burn when lit with fire. His sister coaxed Prahald towards the fire and draped herself, but because their scheme was evil, Prahald was saved. Holika died in fire which is called Holika Dahan. One day before Holi, on full moon night, people put together a bon fire representing Holika Dahan. This is why the festival of Holi also symbolises the triumph of good over evil.

Like many Indian festivals, Holi also has religious ceremonies, lots of food and drinks, and meetings with relatives and friends. What’s special about Holi is that it involves lots of colours that people smear on each other. Colors in powder form or mixed with water to fill water balloons are very common. Pichkari is also used to spray colored water at each other.

People of every age group enjoy Holi, so it’s obvious that many Bollywood songs are also composed for this festival.

Here are my favourite Bollywood songs that show the colorful Holi celebration. But most importantly, the choreography and dance are full of fun and energy in these songs. ENJOY AND HAVE A HAPPY HOLI.
