Camping teaches kids how to use handy tools.

Camping in a tent or in a minivan teaches kids how to use handy tools. Being on the road, carrying limited stuff, and surviving in a new situation isn’t easy. You need to know how to make use of every little thing to your advantage. Kids learn to maintain themselves and the things they use. And everything needs to be done as a team. There are no separate rooms for kids in a camp, so kids learn by observing and following elders. Involving kids in building a campfire by gathering sticks, starting a fire, learning to tie camping knots, using the swiss knife to fix things, pitching tents, folding sleeping bags properly, helping to move things around, etc, are great learning lessons. These things may be only related to camping, but it teaches kids to become indepedent and helpful.

Playing ball games, swimming or fishing, painting or creating art with chalks, tossing frisbee, badminton, picking memorable stones or a flower from the site, dumb charades, hiking, etc. All these activities does not involve using technology and is a refreshing change. It is the best way to take a break from the mobile or laptop, forget all your worries, and have fun with your loved ones. From an early age, kids are taught to avoid certain situations in life. Camping can be their first practical lesson on being careful. It isn’t just about being careful from wild animals or bees or poisonous plants. But in fact, it is an important life lesson that teaches kids to be vigilant of their surroundings. To avoid turning an adventure into an accident, kids should learn to listen to their elders. Kids will understand the difference between being careless and carefree. Also, it is one time when they don’t have access to food delivery which means they get to eat freshly cooked healthy food. Even if it is just adding spices or garnishing or plating food, it keeps kids engaged and they learn to do things together.

Camping teaches kids to be mindful of nature.

Being mindful of nature while camping is a lesson for kids as well as adults. Nature’s beauty can only be maintained if we don’t pollute it. It’s important to teach and learn about our connection to nature. But it’s equally relevant to not litter and leave garbage on campsites. Every little thing that you use should be put in the garbage bins and later disposed of properly. The tall and huge trees, beautiful plants, fresh water, the smell of soil, the chirpy birds, animals, insects, the fresh air, are a gift from nature to us which should not be misused. Spending time in nature is the healthiest outdoor activity that refreshes the mind, body, senses, and soul. Preserving nature is a challenge, and its importance should be taught and learned by everyone.

This companionship helps the child to grow into a healthy individual. After all, humans thrive on communication and connection. Being part of a small or large community helps us feel less lonely and makes life bearable. Cultivating teamwork skills in kids also helps them learn to respect each other’s boundaries, forgive each other, e time out for loved ones, and seek help when required. Camping builds love and trusts in a family.

Conclusion

These are few important life skills that camping teaches to kids. With preparation and planning, camping can be a great experience to build or re-build connections and create beautiful memories. Survival in a real jungle or a concrete jungle is difficult but it is the real connections and basic skills that help us thrive. If we can teach these life skills to kids, they will grow up to become emphathetic individuals and great leaders.

    1. I had gone camping twice when I was a teenager with the YMCA youth group. It was a great learning and fun experience. I got inspired to write this post when I saw my fav YouTube channel – Mari Life – going camping with her family. The videos that she shoots by drone and the calming music synchronises so well with the peace of nature.

  2. I haven’t been camping since I was a kid, although we weren’t taught any useful life or survival skills when I went. But I can certainly see how that could be a good opportunity to teach those kinds of things. Interesting post
