How To Become An Independent Thinker In An AI World

independent thinker

“Independence is loyalty to one’s best self and principals.” – Mark Twain

An independent thinker is someone who does not simply conform to the conventional methods of society. The person uses his judgement and reasoning ability to understand if a practice is unbiased and leads to the growth of himself and the community.

We, as a society, have evolved by adapting ourselves according to the changing environment. It does not mean that we forget our traditions and our history. We know the importance of our roots and learn from our past mistakes.

Where does AI come into the picture?
While our dependence on AI helps in reducing errors, it also minimises our efforts to look beyond machine learning. Working in collaboration with AI has already started with organising and scheduling tasks, but for research about accurate solutions for certain queries, we should check with an authorised reference.

I specifically mention this because managing a fitness blog means that all the medical information provided to my readers is checked based on recent research and not based on a random or individualised experience.

My reason for trying to understand independent thinking in detail was prompted by many Instagram videos that show how people used to navigate before the integration of the internet into our lives.

The list below contains a few activities that may seem quite basic, but while practicing them, you will learn skills that will help you think creatively and emphatically by observing your thoughts and actions as well as learning from things and people around you.

BUILD A STRONG SELF

Ambition and goals, whether big or small, are relevant to creating a worthy life for ourselves and for our loved ones. One of the steps in this direction is to become financially independent. It gives us control over all areas of life. It does not mean just owning stuff; it is an important medium to access a good education.

It can be formal learning, or it could be learning from observing successful people. Interaction with like-minded people provides you support. However, certain habits of successful industry leaders can accelerate your dreams of making informed decisions and choosing the right path.

Being an independent thinker also means connecting with people who have a different perspective than yours.

IMPORTANCE OF SELF-AWARENESS

Self-awareness is another power to harness that works inside out. Reflecting on your thinking habits and actions as they impact others is a better way to reach your goals. For example, when you are driving and you have to decide to turn right or left, the GPS may suggest a narrow alley that does not have traffic. It depends on the type of vehicle you are driving and the time of day to prioritise safety over speed.

It is a subconscious decision to always look for a smoother path. If not, then we can find ways to quiet our worries by diverting minds and engaging in positive activities like listening to calming music.

Many prominent leaders take time out to walk in nature or play a musical instrument to find a solution to a confusing query.

TRAVEL TO UNDERSTAND DIFFERENT CULTURES

Travelling is a significant activity that keeps your mind open to new challenges and experiences. When you meet people from different ethnicities, you will be surprised to find more humanising similarities than differences.

You may want to travel solo or with your partner, but visiting a new location in a different country helps you recognise people beyond social media reports. Creating a unique perspective is part of independent thinking. Away from news and differing views, it builds empathy towards different levels of society.

Our lives are not limited to borders and paying taxes. Beyond all this, we are learning from our surroundings and habits. Independent thinkers do not let societal pressure cloud their judgements. Even a small step to save the climate can go a long way towards a brighter future.

EMBRACE HEALTHY HABITS

Saving human lives is also connected to the basics of having healthy food and drinks. Though there are a lot of theories about diet and exercise, what prevails is having seasonal and home-cooked food. It takes time to understand nutrition and then schedule it accordingly in our daily lives.

This makes the next point even more valuable: the race against time and embracing slowness. Even in a family of four, each member has a different thinking pattern.

Training your mind to pause in the midst of chaos and slowly integrating healthy habits is the best way to ensure a long life.

BECOME SELF-MOTIVATED

Many apps can help you organise your work and personal tasks better. However, if you are not self-motivated, everything can fall apart. You need to release negative impacts from your mind and life to improve focus. That includes spending less time with toxic people who are manipulative for their selfish gains.

Though there are people who are stubborn in their ways, you can break the negative pattern by asking some affirming questions.

Like Business Philosopher Jim Rohn suggests carefully examining your thoughts with,

“You must constantly ask yourself these questions: Who am I around? What are they doing to me? What have they got me reading? What have they got me saying? Where do they have me going? What do they have me thinking? And most important, what do they have me becoming? Then ask yourself the big question: Is that okay?”

Doubts and insecurities can stop us from moving forward to do something good for someone. Manipulative people often try to justify their bias by creating trust issues.

An independent thinker checks the source of any information before judging a person or a company.

Final Thoughts

The biggest power that God gave us humans is the power to choose. Our choices impact our habits and lifestyles. We can create an independent thinking mind with tools like self-awareness, travelling to different countries, a healthy diet, and self-motivation. This will help us achieve our goals in a better way with a positive outlook for the world.

  1. I agree with your point regarding A.I; in general, we shouldn’t be fully reliant and 100% trusting in A.I……we should also be independent to a certain extent and acquire information by doing our own research.

    1. Yes, Raveen. Probably in the coming century we will be able to feel more secure with AI in our lives. But nothing can compare to doing your own research for learning authentic and detailed information. Thanks for reading and liking this post, Raveen.
